Althea Wynne, Sculptor - "Big is beautiful"
Althea Wynne: Big is Beautiful
Hertfordshire, UK, 3 April 2009: Hertfordshire Visual Arts Forum invites members and non-members to learn about the techniques used by Althea Wynne - one of the very few British sculptors producing large ceramic figures by the coiling technique.
Althea will be presenting her Big is Beautiful lecture at the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield on Thurs 30th April 7.30pm Room A161, Lindop Building.
Although Althea’s work is primarily sited outdoors, she also makes large pieces for indoor installation.
Visitors to Bluewater will have seen her 9 metre-high triple obelisk, commissioned by Lendlease, the managers of the complex.
Wynne’s sculptures are fired to a high temperature to render them frost-proof, the stone-ware clay becoming at least as durable as Cotswold stone.
“My work is in high-fired ceramics with a special interest in large sculpture for gardens and architectural settings, although I have extended my range into larger works, obelisks among them. I have made a variety of water-based pieces, a genre in which I am particularly interested; I am helped in the technical aspects by my husband, who is an engineer”, comments Wynne.
Much less costly than bronze and far less attractive to thieves, fired clay sculpture is often considered to be in greater harmony with natural surroundings. Each piece of Althea's work is unique; it is as intimate a creation of the artist's own hands as a thrown pot.
This will be the 2nd quarterly event of the year for Hertfordshire Visual Arts Forum. All are welcome, with just a small fee on the door for non-members.
