2010 (July) - The Not-so-Still Lives of Ben Nicholson
Hertfordshire, UK, 22 July 2010 – Herts Visual Arts Forum (HVAF) is delighted to announce the next quarterly meeting on Thurs 22nd July 7.30-10pm at Lindop building - Room A161,University of Hertfordshire, College Lane Campus, Hatfield, Hertfordshire,AL10 9AB.
Jo Walton will take us though the exciting life of Ben Nicholson who born into a very creative family and became one of Britain’s leading abstract artists in the years before the Second World War. Best known for his still life and landscape paintings, he was a great champion of Modernism. His art challenged his father, the highly successful Edwardian painter Sir William Nicholson. His private life was not always harmonious either and this lecture explores the development of Nicholson’s beautiful images set against a background of conflict – personal, international and artistic.
Lecturer: Jo Walton. After university, began teaching and lecturing combined with a career in art book selling. She set up and ran the Atrium Bookshop in Cork Street and worked at Christies the auctioneers. Now a freelance lecturer and a guide at both Tate galleries Jo takes time out to present this insightful presentation to HVAF members and guests.
As usual doors open 7pm, Lecture starts at 7.30pm. Entrance is free for members of HVAF, £3 for non-members. A drink and time for networking during the interval can be enjoyed by all.
