mark humphrey
Born in Old Harlow in 1957, Mark originally studied law at the Guildhall University, London after which he pursued a successfuI career in marketing public relations with some of Europe’s leading businesses including BT, Phillips, Orange and NTL. As Head of PR and Marketing Communications at Orange he was personally responsible for developing many artistic programmes including Directors in Advertising and Design Cirque du Soleil and The Orange Prize for Fiction.
It was through his friendship with Gozitan sculptor, Joseph Xuereb, that Mark first developed his stone carving skills. Following several private commissions, he studied sculpting techniques at the University of Hertfordshire under Henry Tebbutt and now works as a full time sculptor and designer.
His stone sculptures are produced using direct carving techniques and are carved, filed and sanded by hand. He also produces limited edition sculptures in other media including foundry bronze, composite stone and metal resins.
Working from his studio at Burloes Farm near Royston Hertfordshire, Mark’s
sculptures can be found in homes and gardens throughout the UK and in France, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Switzerland and the USA.
He was awarded the SAND's public sculpture commission in 2004.
He regularly shows his works in galleries, public sites and at group exhibitions.
Mark is an elected associate of the National Society and an elected member of the Fine Art Society, Gibraltar. He is also a member of Hertfordshire Visual Arts Forum and Dorset Visual Arts.
Artist Statement
"Many of my sculptures are influenced by natural forms and facets of human emotions. My aim in creating sculpture is to physically manifest some of the emotional aspects of everyday life as I see it. In doing so I hope to awaken and entice the onlooker to re-act with them, to touch or caress them, and enable their own experiences and feelings to come to the fore"
Mark's sculptures can be described as figurative to abstract and are produced from a varied range of limestone, soapstone and other more exotic stone which enable him to produce sculptures which are both tactile and sensuous.
