Image of the artist with High Seas
Acrylic on paper 150cm x 109cm.
Artist Statement:
The essence of my work is its energy and vibrant immediacy. I am drawn repeatedly to three sources of inspiration, the sea, the landscape and wild flowers. The most successful pieces evolve when I have been able to distil the power, colour, atmosphere and essence of a place or subject and communicate my excitement in a three way dialogue between artist, work and viewer.

Midsummer Storm
Acrylic and oil pastel on paper. 148 by 108 cm
Midsummer Storm was inspired by the late paintings of Turner. I used brooms, brushes and mops as well as paint brushes to build up the marks and movement of the waves.
The Sun in the Storm
Acrylic and oil pastel on paper. 134 by 100 cm
My inspiration for The Sun in the Storm came from Turner and Cornwall. I used brooms, brushes and mops as well as paint brushes and oil pastel to build up the layers.
Seagulls, waves, sea and sand
Acrylic on board. 58 by 74 cm
A painting produced from sketches done after visiting Porthmeor beach at St Ives. At low tide water fills the sand indentations and the sky is reflected making wonderful swirl patterns adding movement and interest to the piece.
Stiff Breeze and the Yacht out in Front
Collage. 70 by 70 cm
This piece is of a yacht race off the south coast and has an exuberant joyful feel.
Stranded on the Sand I
Collage. 70 by 40 cm
This piece is of fishing boats on the sand in Spain. The shadows seemed almost as strong as the boats themselves.I love the interlocking shapes of boats, shadows and ropes.
SS192
Collage. 46 by 72 cm.
This collage was made after a visit to Porthleven on the southern coast of Cornwall. The interest was the many interlocking shapes and strong colours.
These fishing boats had pulled up the beach out of the reach of the storm that had been forecast. I loved the bright colours and interlocking jigsaw shapes.
Storm forecast, boats hauled up

Cornish Lass
Collage. 46 by 72 cm
This was done from a sketch made at Coverack on the Lizard in Cornwall. The interest was the interlocking shapes of ropes, boats, floats and shadows.
The wild Cornish coast has provided the inspiration for this piece. Melted wax has been used as a resist, and the vibrant colours of steam fix dyes.
Wave of White Foam, Pale Turquoise and Green
Silk dye on silk. 30 by 30 cm
Poppies
Silk dye on silk. 26 by 26 cm
The drawing of the poppies has been done freehand on stretched silk. The layers have been built up gradually. Water based gutta has been used as a resist.
This picture comes from the design on a Chinese plate at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The image comes from my sketch. It has been drawn freehand on the silk.

Red Poppies, Yellow Oil Seed
Acrylic on board. 78 by 58 cm
This painting comes from a sketch made of a field of poppies in Buckinghamshire. The bright red poppies, the far field of rape seed and patchwork of the fields arranged themselves in a satisfying way which had to be painted!
