Sheila de Rosa
Printing in its widest sense is at the core of most of my work; from photo-etchings onto paper & fabric, screen printing onto glass, relief prints, monoprints and large-scaled digital prints onto Acrylic and Aluminium.
I teach non-toxic Solar Plate printing to Secondary Schools in Herts, Bucks & London and run Printmaking Courses at my studio in Akeman Street Tring.
The very large works are mainly produced by commission, and the print assemblages & installations are exhibited locally, nationally & internationally.

Title: ‘Cross References’
Fourteen Photo-etching on paper, each 13cms x 18cms, sandwiched between Acrylic sheets and fixed together with aluminium stand-offs.
In 2001 I was involved in a project that put contemporary artists work into 12 Catholic Churches as part of the Brighton Festival Fringe. The work was made in response to, or was provoked by, the space, location, aesthetics, communities or traditions of faith and belief within these churches. This image shows ten of the fourteen images which hung next to each conventional ‘Station of the Cross’ in the church and were intended to offer contemporary views on loneliness, temptation and forgiveness.

Title: Photogram
Glass Photogram. Size 180 x 80 cms
One of a series of prints produced as part of my Masters Degree examination work. This work endeavours to capture the sense of feminine space by exploiting the inherent tendency of glass to trap internal elements during the firing programme. This subtle evidence of glass’s previous molten state is produced by shining light through the prisms created by the movement of molten glass in the kiln.

Title: States of Contradiction.
1 of 3 Screen printed, slumped broken glass sculptures. Size 60 x 35 cms
This is the second of three pieces called ‘States of Contradiction’ which endeavoured to produce works which visualised the tension between two extreme opposites. The soft female activity of weaving, using horizontal threads woven in and out of vertical yarns were replaced with sharp shards of broken glass. Text printed on the weft and images onto the warp completed the visual language created to highlight the dichotomy between the polemic and the practice of war.
