Richard is an historian by training. He has long been interested in art and art history. His boyhood upbringing and lifelong love of the sea are reflected in his artistic expression. His paintings are mainly seascapes and landscapes in a semi-abstract, impressionistic genre. The relationship between art and poetry, especially of the sea, is reflected in his painting. He paints mainly with a palette knife in oil and acrylic in his studio and en plein air. Much of his painting takes place on the Hampshire and Dorset coast where he has exhibited at gallaries in Christchurch and Lymington and at numerous art festivals in Hertfordshire and on the south coast.
