Welcome to October … as Open Studios 2017 draws to a close there is still time for you to tuck in some last-minute visits. With 10 venues open on Thursday, 15 on Friday, 32 on Saturday and 26 on the final Sunday 1st October that adds to over 80 artists ready to welcome you. Sadly I didn’t quite complete my personal challenge to visit every studio, simply because geography, time and a couple of other things conspired against me.  The 40 venues (89 artists, including my own) I did get to were quite honestly an amazing experience: I loved each and every one.  Thank-you to everyone who shared your time and ideas with me, who offered tea, coffee (wine), cakes and more. If you’ve not done your own tour yet, I can’t encourage you enough just to go and have an adventure.

If you’re on Facebook or Twitter you may have seen some of my visit summaries, such a wide variety of art and skills to the kind and generous artists I talked to. If you’ve not seen that yet, do look at our Facebook page, join our PRIVATE Facebook group or follow @HVAF on twitter.

October and November is when we start planning our calendar into next year, so feedback on Open Studios and the new brochure is especially welcome.  If you visited any Open Studios, please complete the visitor’s questionnaire. Also, please complete one of the two members Open Studios questionnaires (a choice depending on whether or not you were part of OS this year), and remember one lucky person drawn at random from each one will win a prize.

Finally, as we move towards the end of the year, I wish you all perhaps a more restful autumn after all the activity in September.
Hillary Taylor, Chair

There is still time to visit the New Maynard Open winners’ exhibition at the New Maynard Gallery in Welwyn Garden City.  Congratulations to HVAF member Janie Graham, who won the 3D prize last year and is therefore one of the exhibitors.  Janie’s exacting and sought after book interpretations are ‘worth the journey’ as they say.
